AfD’s Historic Victory Confirms Dr. Youssef’s 2025 Assessment
Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved an unprecedented historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliamentary elections held on September 6, 2026, topping the results with a record share of approximately 44% of the vote.
The AfD finished far ahead of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which fell to second place with 18.5%. The Left Party came third with approximately 9.3%, followed by the Greens with around 8.8% and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 8.5%.
Meanwhile, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) hovered around the 5% electoral threshold, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) failed to secure representation in the state parliament after receiving only about 2.2% of the vote.
The election was also marked by historically high voter turnout, reaching approximately 78%.[i]
Dr. Youssef had previously noted in the 2025 Annual Geopolitical Report – Europe that:
“Europe’s commitment and propensity towards military strategies, along with increased defense expenditure and the measures undertaken by European nations in this context during 2025, are expected to impact their economies. Certain nations may confront risks of insolvency and expanding budget deficits, which could lead their populations to favor nationalist right-wing parties. This shift may facilitate such parties’ ascent to power in countries where they have historically achieved second- and third-place standings in legislative elections, including France, Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany.”
